Turtle on it’s Back, 2025
An installation that consists of a series of old paintings, which the artist repainted, so that the stains that bled through the canvas became part of the new creation. The paintings hang on thin wooden pillars that create a space simulating a forest, inviting the viewers to walk through it. On the floor of this space stands a series of sculptures: wrapped paintings that are placed on trolleys. The packages are sealed, the story inside is hidden, so they become time capsules — small warehouses of memory and a pictorial past. This image emerged by chance, when works that were placed in the studio alongside wooden masks, created by the artist, suddenly resembled a figure. The work combines paintings and objects that reveal themselves partially, and are sometimes hidden. They echo the figure of the Sphinx and serve as a visual enigma. Mordechay draws inspiration both from the digital age and from historical visual traditions — from cave paintings and medieval art history. The outcome is a collage of vibrating and clashing images, bringing to mind a moment in a dream right before awakening, when subconscious images begin to dissolve.
